Welcome to Location 1980 – a vibrant creative space rooted in hard work, community, and the belief that art should be accessible, authentic, and alive.
Founded by Missouri natives (Jesse Fortune and Brett Douglas) with a Midwestern work ethic and a passion for the Southern California art scene, Location 1980 has transformed a historic Costa Mesa building into a dynamic hub for creativity. Today, the gallery is led by Jesse Fortune, a painter and designer with a bold vision, and supported by Jillian Shanholtz, whose organizational and curatorial insight helps the space thrive.
At Location 1980, we don’t just showcase art — we build community. We produce four major solo exhibitions each year and several group shows in between. Our doors are open not just to viewers, but to creators: we offer biweekly figure-drawing classes, studio space for working artists, and areas that double as venues for parties, music events, and private gatherings.
Jesse a Kansas City Art Institute alum, brings a practical and passionate approach to the gallery. His motto — “The last four letters of ‘artwork’ don’t spell ‘play’” — underscores the belief that creativity and hustle go hand-in-hand. That philosophy has helped Location 1980 gain traction and credibility in the competitive Southern California art world.
We’ve built our reputation the grassroots way — through word of mouth, genuine connections, and a “we know a guy” approach to community support. Our in-gallery community board showcases local businesses, artists, and entrepreneurs — a reflection of our mission to be more than just a gallery, but a resource and a home base for creative growth.
Whether you're an artist looking for a space to create, a collector in search of bold new work, or simply someone who appreciates culture and connection, Location 1980 invites you in.
Come experience what makes our gallery more than a location — it's a movement.
